Personal Finance App

Budgeting tool for freelancers: CSV and OFX statement import, a REST API and a spending overview, deployed in containers on a VPS.

Abstract diagram linking imported statements to an import service, a relational database and a per-category budget breakdown.

Technologies

  • Python
  • FastAPI
  • PostgreSQL
  • React
  • Docker
  • Import CSV / OFX
  • API REST

What I built

  • CSV and OFX statement import
  • FastAPI REST API
  • PostgreSQL data model
  • React interface
  • Freemium model
  • Docker containerisation
  • Deployment on a Hetzner VPS

Context

A personal project built solo between 2024 and 2025, outside coursework and the work-study contract. The tool targets freelancers and was structured around a freemium model at MVP stage.

Problem

Bank statements arrive as CSV or OFX, heterogeneous formats that must be normalised before a budget can be tracked.

My contribution

Solo development of the whole chain: CSV and OFX statement import, a FastAPI REST API, a PostgreSQL data model and a React interface.

Technical architecture

A Python FastAPI service exposes data to a React client, with PostgreSQL for persistence. Everything is containerised with Docker and deployed on a Hetzner VPS.

What I learned

The project covers a full product chain single-handedly: data model, API, interface, containerisation and production deployment on a rented server.
